NEW: Palm Beach Skate Zone cafe, Delray bagel shop cited for roaches – MyPalmBeachPost

A snack bar at Palm Beach Skate Zone in suburban Lake Worth and a Way Beyond Bagels location in suburban Delray Beach were ordered temporarily closed last week after state inspectors found live roaches in the facilities kitchen areas, according to Florida Department of Business & Professional Regulation reports.

Palm Beach Skate Zone at 8125 Lake Worth Road was cited May 1 after an inspector found roughly seven live roaches underneath a coffee machine table and a sink near the front counter at one of the facilities two snack bars. An exterminator was immediately called in to remedy the problem, and the snack bar re-opened less than 24-hours later, General Manager Debbie Freitas said Monday.

We had someone come over within the hour, Freitas said. It is the first time in 20 years this has ever happened.

An exterminator is now treating the facility twice a week, she added.

We got right on it, Freitas said. This is just not us.

Way Beyond Bagels at 16850 Jog Road was temporarily closed on May 1 after inspectors found about 50 live roaches in a back prep room on the floors and walls by a water heater; about five roaches under a bagel making machine; about four roaches under a sink; between 10 and 15 roaches on a floor near a bagel oven; about two roaches on a wall behind a bagel storage shelf; and about 20 roaches on the floor and wall near a kettle used for boiling bagels.

An employee said the restaurant reopened on Thursday.

Harvey Daniels, one of the bagel shops owners, said the restaurant has an impeccable inspection record, adding that the problem may have been caused by a pipe that recently broke.

The problem is completely resolved, Daniels said Monday.

In addition to the roaches, the bagel shop was also cited for 8 other high-priority violations, 8 intermediate violations and 17 basic violations.

Other high-priority violations at Way Beyond Bagels included:

Cooked sausage was held at a temperature of less than 135 degrees.

An employee cracked raw eggs and handled a bagel without washing their hands.

An employee failed to wash hands before changing their gloves and/or putting on gloves to work with food.

An employee wiped face and prepared sandwich without washing their hands.

Pesticide/insecticide labeled for only household use was present in restaurant.

Household Raid was stored over prep counter in prep kitchen.

Household pesticide/insecticide and Lysol disinfectant were stored above sandwich prep station.

Wiping cloth sanitizer solution exceeded the maximum concentration allowed.

During re-inspections on May 2 and 3, more roaches were found, and the restaurant was ordered to remain closed.
